Under 5 Open Optional Pairs - Sat 3 Dec 2022
After several days of the most atrocious weather, Sat dawned fine and clear. We had a full field of 14 registered to play at the 2nd Under 5 Open Optional Pairs but unfortunately Covid decided to make its presence felt knocking out one of the teams while another team was felled by injury. So it was an enthusiastic field of 12 teams from Arapuni, Taupo, Omokoroa, Putaruru and Cambridge Central as well as Tokoroa that took to the greens on a beautiful blue dome day. Some brilliant shots were played but in the end only one team managed a clean sweep with 4 wins on the day - Peter and Debbie Brett from Omokoroa. Top performing Tokoroa team was Jon Welch and Phil Cox.
Our Ladies are "Da Bomb"
Tokoroa fielded two teams at the Chartered Clubs Ladies Outdoor Bowls tournament held in Levin 14-16 Nov. Both teams shone like the diamonds they are , getting into the semi finals. Unfortunately one of our teams bowed out getting 3rd place (still playing amazing bowls) but our other team - Kath Nepe, Alana Nicholas, Maia Wilson and Marama Onehi went on to show just what the South Waikato can produce winning decisively. What makes this even more amazing was three of these amazing ladies are Under 5!! Look out NZ !!!
Club Championships finally underway
It was a blue dome day for the first Championship of the season - the Under 5 Singles. 5 ladies and 5 men met on the green to battle it out for supremacy . It was fantastic to see two newcomers trying out their wings. Megan Pohe-Chubb showed that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. And we were thrilled to see young bowler - Leonard Togia - son of long time member Charlie Togia - step onto the greens for the first time. According to those in the know Leonard is quite a tidy bowler.
Although we still have a couple of rounds to go before the finals are announced - the Interim Results are available here.
Bill Garrick Memorial Opt Triples - Sat 29 October
At 6.45am on Sat morning our President rang the Greenkeeper - it had rained in the night - was the tournament going ahead. The Greenkeeper made his ruling - we have mollycoddled the green long enough - and this tournament is important - LET'S PLAY!
So - with fingers crossed and many muttered imprecations to the weather Gods - 12 teams including visitors from Cambridge, Arapuni and Putaruru, took to the green.
First round was marred with several downpours but bowlers being bowlers - they just shook it off and carried on. This set the pattern for the whole day - squitty showers - nothing too serious - and hey - bowlers have raincoats - don't they?
Lunch provided by the amazing Ann Manthey and her team was well received and then back out for the last two rounds.
With one eye on the increasingly blackening sky, bowlers hurried to finish their last game. Final bell went - games finished - equipment put away and bowlers adjourned to the clubrooms. Then the heavens opened. It held off just long enough. 20 mins later and the green was a paddling pool.
With two teams on 3 wins and a draw, the final result came down to ends won.
The Tok dream team of Gwen Dwane, Tina Jakes and Maia Wilson narrowly won against fellow Tok players Kath and Garry Nepe and Marama Onehi with third place going to visiting Arapuni team Fred Nicoll, Graham Howie and Lionel Haddock.
Tokoroa still shining at Waikato Champs - 6 Nov
Gordon Bond, Paul Howe, Terry Moffatt and Harold Veza showed just what they are made of when they took out the Waikato Championships Men's Fours after beating Cambridge Central. They certainly showed their championship status, calmly showing what they are made of as they firstly saw off Hinuera and then Hillcrest before finally sealing the deal. Very proud of you gents.
